Metlox Pottery

Metlox Pottery produced many outstanding dinnerware lines throughout the 1950s. Frank Irwin, Bob Allen and Evan K. Shaw were the designers of the patterns featured on this page. Their work brings abstract art and modern composition to the tabletop.

The Navajo shape, designed by Allen and Shaw, was inspired by Native American artwork. It was manufactured in 1956. The most noteable features are wide raised rims and an emphasis on rectangular shapes. Available in 52 pieces, the pattern consists of turquoise and brown primitive designs on an off white lightly speckled background.

California Contempora, Mobile and Freeform are three highly modernistic dinnerware lines. All were produced in the mid 1950s. California Contempora integrates pink, black and gray glazes on a satin-flecked background. Mobile features shades of turquoise, purple, yellow and pink on a pale gray flecked background. Freeform combines cocoa, chartreuse and yellow against a background of pale gray and tiny, subtle dots of color. All three patterns are hand painted.
